What is a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)?

SHSM is a ministry-approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and assists in their transition from secondary school to four possible destinations: apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.

At E. C. Drury, the SHSM Program enables Deaf students to gain specific skills and knowledge in the Arts and Culture sector. They may choose from one of three pathways: Stage & Studio Production, The Performing Arts and Visual, Media & Graphic Arts.

SHSM required components include:


1. Eight Specified Grade 11 & 12 Credits including COOP Education
2. Recognized Certificate and Training Courses incl. First Aid, CPR & WHMIS
3. Experiential Learning & Career Exploration
4. “Reach Ahead” Experiences connected to postsecondary options
5. Development of Essential Skills and Work Habits
